Nine horses bred in the Mid-Atlantic became millionaires in 2024. Six earned at least $500,000. Eleven won graded stakes. One nearly captured the Belmont Stakes-G1. Two won nine races each to tie for third place in North America.
And that’s just the basics.
Regional-bred horses shined on any number of stages big and small in 2024, leaving plenty of debate when it came to discussing the year’s best. Who put together the year?
Maryland-bred Post Time won four races, captured two graded stakes and placed in three Grade 1 stakes. New Jersey-bred Book’em Danno did something Post Time couldn’t do — win a Grade 1. Pennsylvania-bred Neecie Marie won two Grade 3 stakes, placed in a Grade 1 and sold for $1 million at the end of the year. Though his wins came in a maiden race and an allowance, Maryland-bred Mindframe may have been the region’s most interesting horse thanks to seconds in the Belmont and Haskell-G1 after looking like a winner in both. West Virginia-bred Coastal Mission took his act on the road, and didn’t disappoint anyone.
Virginia-bred gelding Determined Kingdom won four races, and joined a new barn for 2025 after going through the sales ring for six figures.
